Maps have a way of accumulating guesses.
The 1930 edition of the Ordnance Survey six-inch map for this part of Co. Galway carries a hachured marking at Ardagh, the kind of conventional symbol used to indicate broken or excavated ground. For over fifty years that marking sat on the map, implying something quarried or cut from the earth. When someone finally went to look in 1984, they found a sand pit.
