On an Ordnance Survey map from 1933, a small hachured marking, the cartographer's shorthand for a depression or earthwork in the landscape, sits quietly in Ballintober, County Galway, looking for all the world like something ancient and significant.
When someone finally went to check in 1985, the feature turned out to be a disused sand and gravel quarry, almost certainly worked sometime after 1700. It is, in other words, the kind of place that looks like history from a distance and turns out to be industry up close.
