Not every place marked on an official record turns out to be what it claims.
At Ballydoyle in County Cork, a site was logged as a quarry in two separate heritage inventories, in 1988 and again in 1998, yet when the evidence was examined more carefully, it could not be confirmed as an archaeological monument at all. It occupies a curious position, therefore, somewhere between the documented and the dismissed, a location that made it onto the map twice and then quietly failed to justify its own listing.
