Not every place on a heritage record turns out to be what it claims.
At Brookville in County Cork, a site was logged as a quarry in successive official surveys across the late twentieth century, appearing in both the 1988 and 1998 rounds of national monument recording. The trouble is that nobody could quite confirm it deserved to be there at all. When the evidence was reviewed, it fell short of what would be needed to accept the site as a genuine archaeological monument, leaving it in an odd administrative limbo: recorded, named, mapped, and essentially unverifiable.
