Near Carra in County Galway, a disused gravel pit sits quietly in the landscape, notable less for what it contains than for what it turned out not to be.
At some point it drew enough attention to warrant investigation and formal recording, only for that process to conclude, plainly and finally, that no archaeology was present. It is a hole in the ground where people once extracted gravel, and nothing more.
