On an Ordnance Survey map from 1933, a cluster of hachures, the short radiating lines cartographers used to indicate slopes or surface disturbances, drew enough attention to be recorded and investigated.
What those marks turned out to represent was modest by any measure: a small pit cut into the side of a hill near Cashel in County Galway, the kind of minor working that would once have supplied local stone or aggregate for roads, walls, or building repairs without anyone thinking it worth remarking upon.
