Not every site that ends up in an archaeological record turns out to be what it first appeared.
On the Castle Bernard Demesne in County Cork, there is a disused stone quarry that was listed as a potentially significant site in both a 1988 survey and a subsequent register a decade later, only for closer scrutiny to conclude that the evidence simply does not support treating it as an archaeological monument. It sits in a quiet corner of a historic estate, a working scar in the landscape that was once productive and is now silent, but archaeologically speaking, unremarkable.
