Quarry, Claremount, Co. Galway

In the pastureland around Claremount in County Galway, there is a place that has effectively ceased to exist, yet left enough of a paper trail to earn its own entry in the historical record.

What was once a sand pit, dug out of the ground at some point after 1700, has vanished so completely that no visible surface trace remains today. The ground has closed over it, the grass has grown back, and only the maps remember it was ever there.

The Ordnance Survey's first edition six-inch map, produced in the nineteenth century as part of a monumental effort to chart the entire island of Ireland in meticulous detail, recorded the feature as a sand pit. By the time of the 1898 to 1899 resurvey, it appeared as a hachured circular feature, the small radiating lines used by cartographers to indicate a depression or hollow in the ground. Together, these two snapshots suggest a working pit that was gradually falling out of use, its edges softening, its purpose fading. Sand pits of this kind were common in rural Ireland, dug locally to supply sand for building mortar, plastering, or land improvement. This one left no archaeology in the formal sense, its post-1700 date placing it outside the scope of sites typically assessed for ancient or medieval significance. What it does leave is a quiet curiosity: a hole that was once useful enough to map, and is now indistinguishable from the field around it.
