Quarry, Cnocán Raithní, Co. Galway

At Cnocán Raithní in County Galway, there is a place that has, in a very literal sense, ceased to exist, and yet still managed to earn a record.

On the 1933 edition of the Ordnance Survey six-inch map, a small hachured feature, a cartographic symbol used to suggest a depression or excavation in the ground, marks what surveyors later interpreted as a sand or gravel pit. By the time anyone went to look for it in 1983, there was nothing left to find. No surface trace, no hollow, no telling outline in the earth.

What makes this quietly interesting is less the absence of the pit itself than the paper trail it left behind. The feature appeared on a map, was noted, was visited, and was found to be gone, all within the ordinary machinery of how landscapes get recorded. Sand and gravel pits of this kind were commonplace workings in rural Ireland, modest local quarries scraped out to supply material for roads or building, rarely documented and rarely mourned. Because this one dated to after 1700, it fell outside the scope of formal archaeological classification, which tends to focus on earlier remains. It survives, then, only as a cartographic ghost, a mark on a mid-twentieth-century map pointing toward something that had already been consumed by the ground or simply graded away before anyone thought to measure it.
