Quarry, Coolcarron, Co. Cork

Not every site that ends up in the archaeological record turns out to be what it first appeared.

At Coolcarron in County Cork, a feature recorded as a quarry in the late twentieth century occupies an odd position: present in the official lists, yet not quite substantiated by the evidence on the ground.

The site was catalogued as a quarry in 1988 and again in 1998, appearing in successive rounds of national monument recording. Yet the available evidence was judged insufficient to confirm that anything of genuine archaeological significance was actually located there. It is, in other words, a listing that amounts to a question mark, a place held in official suspension between potential significance and probable ordinariness.
