Quarry, Copsetown, Co. Cork

Not every entry in the historical record points toward something grand.

Near Copsetown in County Cork, a site listed simply as a quarry occupies an ambiguous position in the landscape and in the archives: flagged in two successive official surveys, in 1988 and again in 1998, yet ultimately judged to lack sufficient evidence to be accepted as the location of any archaeological monument. It sits, in other words, in a kind of administrative limbo, noted but unconfirmed, recorded but not quite believed.
