On an old Ordnance Survey map, cartographers used hachures, short radiating lines drawn to suggest the shape and slope of raised or sunken ground, to mark a feature at the base of a hill in the bogland of Corlackan, County Galway.
The 1931 edition of the six-inch map recorded something there, but the symbol alone gave little away. It took a visit in 1984 to establish what it actually was: a disused sand and gravel pit, long abandoned and absorbed back into the surrounding landscape of bog.
