Near Derryhiveny in County Galway, a disused gravel pit sits quietly in the landscape, the kind of feature that tends to be passed over in favour of more obviously legible history.
Gravel pits of this sort were once working parts of the rural and agricultural economy, supplying material for road-making and land drainage, and their abandonment often leaves little trace beyond a hollow in the ground, perhaps partially flooded, perhaps slowly reclaimed by scrub and rough grass.
