Quarry, Derryhiveny, Co. Galway

Mining
On the Derryhiveny townland in County Galway, there sits a disused quarry, one of countless such sites scattered across the Irish countryside where stone was once cut from the earth and the workings were eventually abandoned to weather and vegetation.
Quarries like this one were the quiet infrastructure of rural Ireland, supplying material for field walls, road surfaces, and local buildings before mechanised transport made it practical to move stone over long distances. When the stone ran out, or the demand did, they were simply left.
