Mining
Within the demesne lands of Eyrecourt in County Galway, a small hollow sits in open pastureland, unremarkable to the eye but carrying a quiet paper trail.
On the 1944 to 1945 revision of the Ordnance Survey six-inch map, the feature was recorded using hachures, the fine radiating lines cartographers use to suggest a depression or earthwork in the landscape. That cartographic notation was enough to prompt a closer look, and when someone did look, in 1984, they found simply a hollow in the ground, most likely the remains of a disused sand or gravel quarry. It is the kind of place that accumulates significance only because a map once thought it worth marking.
