On old Ordnance Survey maps, hachures, those small radiating lines used to suggest slopes or depressions in the landscape, can mark anything from an ancient earthwork to something far more mundane.
In the demesne at Eyrecourt, County Galway, one such marking on the 1944 to 1945 revision of the six-inch OS map turned out, when someone finally went to look in 1984, to be a disused gravel pit. It sits in meadowland, its outline now defined less by cartographic convention than by a dense tangle of trees and briars that have colonised the depression over the decades since it was last worked.
