Quarry, Feagh, Co. Galway

On a stretch of hilly pastureland in Feagh, County Galway, there is a small depression in the landscape that once attracted enough official attention to be recorded, investigated, and then quietly set aside.

It appears on the 1920 edition of the Ordnance Survey six-inch map as a hachured feature, the short radiating lines cartographers used to suggest a hollow or raised earthwork, the kind of mark that, in an Irish context, can hint at anything from a ringfort to a souterrain. When someone went out to look at it in 1983, the reality was considerably more modest: a sand pit, dug at some point after 1700, of no particular antiquity.
