Sometimes a place earns its obscurity honestly.
At Feaghbeg in County Galway, a small depression in the landscape was recorded on the 1944 to 1945 revision of the Ordnance Survey six-inch map as a hachured feature, the cartographic shorthand for a hollow or earthwork of some kind. It sat there, unnamed and unexplained, until a field inspection in 1984 confirmed it to be a disused quarry, almost certainly worked at some point after 1700. That was enough to settle the matter officially, and the site was noted and set aside.
