On the 1945 to 1946 revision of the Ordnance Survey six-inch map, a hachured feature appears at Glenanail in County Galway. Hachures are the short radiating lines mapmakers use to suggest a depression or slope in the land, and their presence here implied something worth marking, something that caught a surveyor's eye and made it onto the official record. When someone finally went to look in 1983, the feature turned out to be a quarry pit, almost certainly dug after 1700, and probably connected to the kind of small-scale local extraction that once supplied building stone or road material to parishes across the west of Ireland.

The gap between the map revision and the ground inspection, nearly four decades, is itself quietly telling. Countless such features were mapped, noted, and then left to sit in archives until somebody got around to checking them. This one, when checked, yielded nothing archaeologically ancient. Because it post-dates AD 1700, it falls outside the scope of surveys concerned with prehistoric and early historic monuments, which is a reasonable boundary but one that tends to leave post-medieval working landscapes underexamined. Quarries of this kind were the infrastructure of everyday rural life, and their ordinariness is precisely why so few of them have been studied in any depth.
