Mining
At Gortavoher in County Galway, there is a disused gravel pit that found its way into the historical record, not because of anything buried beneath it or built beside it, but simply because it exists and someone thought it worth noting.
It is, by any measure, an ordinary extraction site, the kind of shallow working that once supplied road-fill or drainage aggregate to farms and townlands across the west of Ireland, and which has since been left to whatever the land does next.
