Mining
In the western half of Highpark townland in County Galway, a cluster of seven small disused gravel pits sits quietly in the landscape, unremarkable at a glance yet curiously numerous for so compact an area.
Gravel extraction of this kind was once common across rural Ireland, where local pits supplied the material needed for road surfacing, drainage work, and building. These pits carry no archaeological significance, but their grouping in one corner of a single townland speaks to a period of sustained, localised industry that has since fallen entirely out of use.
