At Kilmeen in County Galway, a north-south road divides what were once two working gravel pits, one sitting to each side of the carriageway.
Both are now disused, their extraction work long finished, leaving behind the quiet, hollowed-out geometry that old quarry workings tend to produce in the landscape.
