On the north-western edge of a gravel ridge in Kilnaslieve, County Galway, there is a small hollow in the landscape that took over half a century to be properly accounted for.
On the 1932 edition of the Ordnance Survey six-inch map, the spot was marked with hachures, the short radiating lines cartographers used to indicate a depression or slope in the terrain. When someone finally went to look in 1984, the feature turned out to be a disused quarry pit, the kind of working that would once have supplied local building or road material before falling quiet and half-disappearing into the ground.
