On the Ordnance Survey six-inch map of 1932, a small hachured mark sits in the flat grassland near Kinclare in County Galway.
Hachuring, the cartographer's shorthand for a depression or raised feature in the landscape, suggested something worth noting, perhaps an earthwork, a rath, or some other remnant worth investigating. When someone finally went to look in 1983, the reality was considerably more mundane: a slight dip in the ground, all that remained of an infilled, disused gravel pit. The landscape had almost entirely swallowed it.
