On top of a rise in the pastureland of Kingsland, County Galway, there is a disused gravel pit that earned a small mystery simply by being marked on a map.
The 1933 edition of the Ordnance Survey six-inch map showed a hachured feature at the spot, hachures being the short radiating lines cartographers used to suggest a depression or earthwork, the kind of marking that tends to attract archaeological attention. It looked, on paper at least, like something worth investigating.
