Mining
At Knockaunbaun in County Galway, a disused gravel pit sits quietly in the landscape, the kind of industrial remnant that tends to be passed over in favour of more obviously dramatic features.
Gravel extraction was once common across Connacht, where glacial deposits left behind by the last ice age created rich seams of aggregate useful for road-building and construction. When workings like this were abandoned, they were rarely commemorated or explained; they simply stopped, leaving a scar that weather and vegetation gradually soften over time.
