Near Kylemore in County Galway, a disused gravel pit sits quietly in a landscape better known for its abbey and its lough.
Gravel pits of this kind were once commonplace features of the Irish countryside, opened to supply road-building and construction projects before modern haulage made it practical to source aggregate from further afield. When the workable material was exhausted, they were simply left, their function spent.
