There is something quietly telling about a feature on a map that turns out, on closer inspection, to be almost nothing at all.
Somewhere in the flat pastureland of Lattoon, County Galway, a mark on a 1932 Ordnance Survey six-inch map, rendered in the hatched lines cartographers used to suggest a depression or earthwork, was eventually visited in 1983 and found to be an overgrown, disused sand or gravel pit. No ancient enclosure, no buried monument, just a working hollow in the ground, long abandoned and slowly being reclaimed by vegetation.
