Quarries of this kind were once essential features of the Irish countryside, providing the raw material for field walls, farm buildings, and road foundations across the west of Ireland. Limestone, the dominant bedrock across much of Connacht, was cut and dressed for local use, and the small quarries that served individual townlands rarely made it into any formal record of industry or heritage.
