Mining
At the townland of Lissaniska in County Galway, a disused gravel pit sits quietly in the landscape, one of countless such workings that punctuate the Irish countryside yet rarely attract a second glance.
Gravel pits of this kind were once practical necessities, dug to extract the glacial deposits left across much of Connacht after the last ice age, and used locally for road maintenance, construction fill, and agricultural drainage. When the material ran out or the need passed, they were simply abandoned, left to be slowly reclaimed by grass, scrub, and standing water.
