Mining
At the townland of Lissaniska in County Galway, a disused gravel pit sits quietly in the landscape, the kind of small industrial scar that accumulates across rural Ireland wherever road-building and construction once drew on whatever the local ground could offer.
Gravel pits of this type were worked opportunistically, often by local contractors or county councils extracting aggregate for nearby roads, and when the material ran out or the workings became uneconomical, they were simply left. Over time the vegetation creeps back, the edges soften, and what was once a working extraction site becomes an unremarkable hollow that most people pass without a second thought.
