Not every site earns its place on the archaeological map, and the quarry at Maulmacredmond in County Cork is a quiet example of how the record sometimes corrects itself.
Listed as a quarry in two successive national surveys, in 1988 and again in 1998, it was carried forward in the registers without the underlying evidence ever quite justifying its inclusion as an archaeological monument. In other words, someone noted it, someone else noted the noting, and the site accumulated a kind of official presence that the ground itself may not support.
