Quarry, Millford, Co. Galway

Near Millford in County Galway, a small area of ground was once marked on the 1930 edition of the Ordnance Survey six-inch map with hachures, the short radiating lines cartographers used to indicate a depression or excavation in the landscape.

When the site was inspected in 1984, what those marks had quietly preserved in the cartographic record turned out to be the outline of a sand or gravel pit, the kind of modest extraction site that supplied local construction and road-making before industrialised quarrying made such workings largely obsolete.
