There is something quietly deflating about a place that turns out to be exactly what it looks like.
In the undulating pastureland of Moyarwood in County Galway, a feature that appeared on the 1933 edition of the Ordnance Survey six-inch map with sufficient presence to attract attention was, on closer inspection in 1983, nothing more than a gravel pit. No ancient earthwork, no buried structure, just a working hollow in the ground where material was extracted, most likely for road-making or land drainage, at some point after 1700.
