Quarry, Oultort, Co. Galway

There is something quietly instructive about a feature that appears on a map as a broken line, suggesting uncertainty or incompleteness, and turns out, on closer inspection, to be simply a hole in the ground that nobody uses any more.

In the undulating pastureland of Oultort in County Galway, a subrectangular outline recorded on the 1947 to 1948 revision of the Ordnance Survey six-inch map was investigated in 1984 and identified as an overgrown disused quarry. The broken line, a cartographic convention typically used to indicate something imprecisely known or partially visible, had preserved the site's outline across decades even as the vegetation crept in.

Because the quarry dates to after 1700, it falls outside the scope of surveys concerned with earlier archaeology, which means it occupies a slightly awkward position in the record, noted but not fully examined, present but not prioritised. Small extractive sites like this one were once common features of the Irish countryside, worked locally for stone to build field walls, farmhouses, or road foundations, and then quietly abandoned when the need passed or the seam ran out. What makes this particular example worth a moment's attention is less the quarry itself than the gap it illustrates between what a map shows and what the land actually holds, and the modest act of going to look.
