In the pastureland of Park, County Galway, there is a hollow in the ground that took more than fifty years to be properly identified.
On the 1930 edition of the Ordnance Survey six-inch map, the spot is marked with hachures, the small radiating lines cartographers use to indicate a depression or slope in the terrain. It was only when someone walked out to look at it in person, in 1984, that the marking resolved into something more specific: a disused quarry pit, long since abandoned and absorbed back into the surrounding farmland.
