Quarry, Portumna, Co. Galway

On the outskirts of Portumna in County Galway, a disused quarry sits quietly in the landscape, the kind of place that tends to go unnoticed precisely because its working life is over.

Quarries of this sort were once essential features of Irish rural life, supplying the raw stone material for field walls, farmhouses, bridges, and the slow accumulation of built structures that shaped the countryside over centuries. When the work stopped, they were simply left, their cut faces and spoil edges gradually softened by vegetation.
