Mining
On the edge of Portumna in County Galway, there is a disused gravel pit, the kind of site that rarely draws attention and is easily passed without a second thought.
Gravel extraction was once common across the Irish midlands, where glacial deposits left thick layers of aggregate that proved useful for road building and construction. When workings like this fall out of use, they tend to be absorbed quietly back into the landscape, neither preserved nor particularly remarked upon.
