On a hillock in the grassland of Rahyconor, County Galway, there sits a feature that passed for something more significant than it turned out to be.
On the 1945 revision of the Ordnance Survey six-inch map, a hachured marking, the cartographic shorthand for a raised or irregular landform, drew enough attention to warrant a visit. When a surveyor finally walked the ground in 1984, what looked on paper like a potential earthwork of some antiquity resolved itself into a scatter of overgrown hollows, most likely the remains of a disused sand or gravel pit. It is the kind of place that exists in the gap between map and landscape, between expectation and reality.
