A disused gravel pit in the townland of Rahyconor, County Galway, is not the sort of place that typically draws attention, and that relative anonymity is perhaps the most honest thing about it.
Gravel pits of this kind were working features of the rural Irish landscape, dug to supply the aggregate needed for road-making and construction, and when the material ran out or the need passed, they were simply left. What remains is a hollow in the ground, the kind of small industrial scar that quietly accumulates moss and water and the occasional scrub willow without anyone particularly noticing.
