What makes the site genuinely curious is the difficulty of separating human industry from older landscape features: a curving bank roughly forty metres in chord, sitting immediately east of the quarry face, appears to be upcast material thrown up during quarrying rather than anything of prehistoric origin, yet the area still registers as a place of uncertain archaeological significance.

The Ordnance Survey's first six-inch map, produced in 1840, shows an irregular enclosure on the site with linear field boundaries running from the north-west and south-east sides. By the time the second edition was surveyed in 1904, the picture had shifted: the curving bank had appeared, almost certainly as a by-product of quarrying activity, and local knowledge confirms that this ground has functioned as a working quarry for as long as anyone can remember. The long continuity of that use is precisely what complicates any reading of the earlier enclosure. Whether the 1840 feature was itself a remnant of older activity, or simply a field arrangement later consumed by quarrying, is not easy to resolve. Adding another layer of interest, a possible ringfort, the roughly circular enclosed settlements that were common across Ireland from the early medieval period, lies approximately a hundred metres to the east-north-east, close enough to suggest that this corner of Tipperary was once a more structured landscape than its current overgrown state implies.
