On the 1930 edition of the Ordnance Survey six-inch map, a hachured marking sits quietly in the townland of Tobernaclug in County Galway.
Hachuring, the fine radiating lines cartographers used to suggest slope or depression, can indicate anything from a hillside to an earthwork of some antiquity, and so this particular marking was duly noted as a candidate for closer examination. When someone finally went to look in 1984, they found nothing more ancient than a disused gravel pit, worked at some point after 1700 and long since abandoned to the landscape.
