In the townland of Treanbaun in County Galway, a small depression in the ground carries a paper trail that stretches back nearly a century.
On the 1932 edition of the Ordnance Survey six-inch map, the site was marked with hachures, the short radiating lines cartographers used to indicate a hollow or slope in the terrain. That notation sat quietly on the map for decades until a field inspection in 1985 confirmed what the markings had long suggested: the hollow was not a natural feature but the result of quarrying operations, the ground having been cut away at some point in the past to extract stone or other material.
