Railstown Church (in ruins), Railstown, Co. Tipperary

What stops you in your tracks at this ruined church in County Tipperary is not the collapse itself but the evidence of what remains.

The west gable still rises to around 6.2 metres, and the walls of the nave, built from roughly coursed limestone rubble with crude quoins at the corners, survive to a height of 3.6 metres in places. The church sits on a rise within a graveyard, set in gently rolling pasture, and earthworks in the surrounding fields to the north, east, and west suggest the site had a wider significance that the ruin alone no longer communicates.

The building follows the classic medieval Irish plan of nave and chancel, two distinct compartments separated by a chancel arch. Here that arch was round-headed, spanning 2.26 metres, though the central voussoirs, the wedge-shaped stones that lock an arch together, have now fallen out, leaving a gap at the crown. The nave had opposing doorways in its north and south walls, a common arrangement that allowed processions or separate entry for different sections of a congregation, though the cut-stone surrounds of both doors have long since been removed or robbed. Windows also once faced each other at the east end of the nave walls, and a third sat in the west gable, but all have been broken out and no dressed stonework survives in any of them. Patches of internal render still cling to the chancel walls and to at least one window embrasure in the nave, a reminder that these limestone rubble surfaces were once finished smooth and likely whitewashed. Just outside the north wall of the chancel lies what may be a font, a stone basin used for baptism, though its identification is not certain.
