Ringforts

Rathmore, Mweeloon, Co. Galway

On a low hillock in open grassland near Mweeloon, there is a ringfort that has survived the centuries in unusually good condition.

What makes it worth a closer look is not just its preservation but its complexity: two concentric earthen banks with a fosse, or ditch, cut between them, enclosing an interior that still carries the ghost-marks of internal divisions. These grassed-over stony banks within the enclosure suggest the space was once organised into distinct areas, perhaps for livestock, storage, or domestic use, in ways that a simpler fort would not reveal.

Ringforts, known variously as raths or lios, were the dominant form of rural settlement in early medieval Ireland, typically dating from roughly the sixth to the twelfth centuries. Most were enclosed farmsteads, their banks and ditches offering a degree of protection and a clear boundary of ownership or status. A two-banked example like this one at Mweeloon, sometimes called a bivallate rath, would have signalled a household of some consequence. The site measures approximately 58 metres east to west and 51 metres north to south, making it a substantial enclosure. A causewayed gap on the southern side, about 5.8 metres wide, is likely the original entrance, where the fosse was left uncut to allow passage across. The outer bank, though partially overlain by later field walls on the north-east to east and south-west to west arcs, can still be traced running from north through east to west. References to the site appear in sources going back to Holt in 1912, and it was noted again by McCaffrey in 1952 and by Killanin and Duignan in their 1967 survey of Irish antiquities.

The inner bank and fosse are visible all the way around, which is relatively rare; erosion, agricultural improvement, and stone-robbing have reduced many comparable sites to faint cropmark outlines. Here, the form of the place remains legible. The internal divisions in the south-west quadrant and east sector reward careful attention once you are inside the enclosure, especially in low, raking light when slight changes in ground level become easier to read.
