Burial Grounds

Relick Grave Yd, Donore, Co. Kildare

In the middle of a cultivated field in Donore, County Kildare, there is a low rectangular hump of grass that local people have long called 'the Roilic', an anglicisation of the Irish word for burial ground. It sits at the top of a very gentle tillage slope, unremarkable to a passing eye, yet it marks a place that was once a functioning churchyard and remains, in diminished form, on land that has been continuously farmed around it for generations. What makes it quietly unsettling is the contrast between its stubborn persistence and its steady erasure: the tramlines left by heavy agricultural machinery run directly across its surface, pressing into ground that was once considered sacred.

When the first edition of the Ordnance Survey six-inch map was produced in 1838, the site was recorded as a rectangular enclosure roughly 80 metres east to west and 60 metres wide, large enough to contain both a church and a Holy Bush. Holy Bushes, typically hawthorns associated with a saint or a holy well, were a common feature of early Irish sacred landscapes, often treated with considerable reverence by local communities. By the time the site was surveyed in more recent decades, its footprint had contracted dramatically. What remains is a grass-covered platform measuring approximately 20 metres by 12 to 15 metres and rising only 0.4 to 0.6 metres above the surrounding field, a fraction of the area documented nearly two centuries earlier. The name 'Relick Grave Yd' on that 1838 map preserves an older usage of the word 'relic', once applied in Ireland to the precincts of an early church or burial ground rather than to a physical object.

The site has not been fully ploughed out, which is something, though the ground that survives tells a compressed story of long attrition. The platform is easily missed from any distance, blending into the gentle roll of the field around it, and there is little to signal its presence beyond the grass that has held its ground where tillage has not.
