Ring-ditch, Ballyconra, Co. Kilkenny

There is nothing to see at this particular spot in Ballyconra, and that is precisely what makes it worth knowing about.

On a fairly flat valley floor, in grassland that has long since been ploughed and reclaimed, a circular ring-ditch lies entirely invisible at ground level. No earthwork rises above the soil, no stones mark the perimeter. The only way it came to be recorded at all was through aerial photography, which revealed it as a cropmark, the faint trace left when buried features affect the growth of vegetation above them differently from the surrounding ground. From the air, the circle becomes legible; from the field, nothing.

The ring-ditch at Ballyconra is not alone. It sits within a cluster of at least three such features, with companion ring-ditches lying roughly 30 metres to the north-north-west and around 80 metres to the west-south-west. A further circular enclosure appears in the cropmark record approximately 320 metres to the south-west. Ring-ditches are generally understood to be the remnants of prehistoric funerary or ceremonial monuments, often the eroded traces of round barrows whose central mounds have been entirely levelled by centuries of agriculture. What makes the Ballyconra group particularly suggestive is the possibility that these features were once associated with a co-axial field system, a type of ancient land division in which boundaries run in broadly parallel lines across a landscape, implying organised and sustained agricultural use of the area over a long period. The combination of burial monuments and a structured field system, if the association holds, points to a settled and purposeful use of this valley floor in prehistory, the details of which are now recoverable only through the indirect evidence of soil and crop.
