Ring-ditch, Ballymacoonoge, Co. Wexford

On a low, north-eastward-facing slope in County Wexford, a circular ditch lies largely invisible beneath the soil, detectable only because a magnetometer was passed over the ground before a quarry moved in.

That instrument, sensitive to subtle variations in the earth's magnetic field caused by buried features, traced an arc of a ditch running east, south, and west around a possible pit at the centre, the whole thing measuring roughly 9.5 metres across. This is a ring-ditch, a type of monument most commonly associated with prehistoric burial, where a circular or near-circular trench was dug around a central area, sometimes to delimit a grave, sometimes as part of a now-vanished mound. The central pit here, at approximately three metres in diameter, is consistent with that kind of funerary context, though its precise purpose remains unconfirmed.

The site came to light through a magnetometer survey carried out in 2018, ahead of planned quarry development in the area. The survey was conducted by Gimson and colleagues, who flagged the arc of the ditch and the central pit as a feature of potential archaeological significance. Subsequent ground-truthing, in the form of archaeological testing in 2019 led by M. Carroll, found no related material in the surrounding area, and monitoring of topsoil removal across a roughly L-shaped zone of about 3.3 hectares to the east and south produced nothing further. The ring-ditch itself, along with an associated monument already recorded nearby, was set aside for preservation within a fallow area, spared from the quarry works. In that sense, the site occupies an unusual position: significant enough to protect, yet largely silent when the ground around it was examined more closely.
