What ground-level inspection would reveal as ordinary farmland resolves, when seen from altitude, into the faint outline of a ring-ditch, a circular fosse or ditch roughly ten metres in diameter whose earthworks have long since been levelled by centuries of ploughing and agricultural use. The form endures as a cropmark, a phenomenon where buried features influence the growth of whatever is planted above them, causing subtle but legible differences in colour and height that only become apparent in aerial photographs, particularly during dry summers when soil moisture variations are most pronounced.

The outline was captured in a Cambridge University Collection of Aerial Photography image taken in July 1970, one of countless oblique and vertical shots taken across Ireland during that period as part of broader landscape survey efforts. Ring-ditches of this kind are generally understood by archaeologists as the ploughed-down remains of Bronze Age burial monuments, the circular ditches that once surrounded low earthen mounds or barrows. At around ten metres across, this is a modest example. What makes the Deer Park site quietly interesting is that it does not sit in isolation. Two further enclosures were identified in the same field, one to the northwest and another, less certainly defined, to the southeast, suggesting that this particular patch of ground accumulated archaeological significance over time, with monuments gravitating, as they often did, towards places already marked out as meaningful.
