Ring-ditch, Dromore, Co. Cork

Some archaeological sites announce themselves with standing stones or crumbling walls.

Others exist only as shadows pressed into the soil, visible for a few weeks each summer when a dry spell stresses the crops above them and the buried past bleeds through. At Dromore in north County Cork, a small circular enclosure of roughly ten metres in diameter falls into this second, quieter category. It was captured in an aerial photograph taken in July 1989 as part of a systematic survey of the Cork landscape, appearing not as any upstanding feature but as a cropmark, the faint ghost of a filled-in fosse. A fosse, in archaeological terms, is simply a ditch, typically dug to define or defend an enclosed space. When a ditch is backfilled over centuries, the disturbed earth retains moisture differently from the undisturbed ground around it, and the crops rooted above it grow fractionally taller or greener, tracing the original cut in living geometry that can only be read from altitude.

The enclosure at Dromore is classed as a ring-ditch, a term that covers a range of circular or near-circular ditched features whose original function is not always easy to determine. Some ring-ditches are the eroded remnants of prehistoric burial mounds; others may have enclosed small settlements or served ritual purposes. At ten metres across, this one is modest, not much larger than a generous room. What makes the find more intriguing is the presence of a possible second circular enclosure recorded approximately eighty metres to the south-south-east. Whether the two features are contemporary or related is unknown, but their proximity suggests this patch of north Cork farmland may have seen more sustained, structured use in the distant past than the present landscape gives any indication of.
